Flamengo Park

Flamengo Park, also known as Aterro do Flamengo, is the largest public park and recreation area in Rio de Janeiro and the largest urban seaside park in the world. It stretches along Guanabara Bay in the Flamengo neighborhood, between Downtown Rio and Copacabana. The park features Modernist gardens designed by Roberto Burle Marx and is home to the Rio de Janeiro Museum of Modern Art, the Carmen Miranda Museum, and the Monument to the Dead of World War II.

• The park has a strong sports tradition, with facilities for outdoor recreation. Marathons and cycling races often start or finish here.
• It provides a main segment for Rio's Cycling Race, which is a key event in the UCI world ranking.
• Marina da Glória, within the park, hosted sailing competitions during the 2007 Pan American Games.

A bit of history

The park was envisioned by Lota de Macedo Soares, conceived and designed by Affonso Eduardo Reidy, with gardens and civic landscapes by Roberto Burle Marx. It was completed in 1965.
